A chronological sprint retrospective to spot patterns and connections over time. Learn more: Retrospective formats.
Goal: look at the sprint chronologically to spot patterns. Check-in: everyone names one word for the sprint.
Flipchart for check-in
Draw a horizontal timeline covering every day of the sprint. Everyone gets green sticky notes (positive events) and red sticky notes (difficult moments). Going round the room, each person adds their events chronologically and briefly explains them.
Long roll of paper or whiteboard, green and red sticky notes, pens
Analyze together: where do red dots cluster? Are there trigger events? What led to green phases? Which external factors affected the team? Identify patterns and connections.
Markers to highlight patterns
Define levers: how can triggers be avoided? How can we create more green moments? Formulate and record 2-3 concrete actions.
Action board or flipchart for actions
Closing round: what was surprising about the timeline? Quick feedback from everyone. Alternative format: 4Ls Retro.
