Main work (~60–70% of time): work through new content, apply methods, practice, discuss. This is where the actual learning happens. 25–30 minutes in a 45-minute lesson, 55–65 minutes in a 90-minute one.

  • Small buffer after the opener (2–3 min) in case it runs longer.
  • Larger buffer in the main work, e.g. between two work phases.
  • Small buffer before the close, to wind down calmly.

If the buffer isn't needed? Perfect – then you have time for deepening, questions or a relaxed lesson close. Small energizers and activations also work well as buffer-fillers, for example after longer work phases.

Method 4: Build a Template Library

The biggest time savings come from reuse. Instead of reinventing every lesson, build a library of proven lesson flows:

  • Standard opener for new topics (e.g. brainstorming + guiding question, 7 min)

Mistake 1: Too Much Content for Too Little Time

Symptom: you plan five activities for 45 minutes but only get through three. The lesson ends hectically, with no real close.

Cause: we systematically overestimate how fast students work. What feels like 10 minutes in your head takes 18 minutes in class – because you have to explain, repeat and organise.

Fix: plan a maximum of 3–4 clearly separated phases per 45-minute lesson. Better less content, but deepened. And: multiply your estimated times by a factor of 1.5 – that's more realistic.

Cause: transitions cost time but are often not planned. The pure work time is calculated, not the organisation time.
