Why Sessionplan works better than a spreadsheet

Spreadsheets and Word documents are how most people start planning sessions. They work – until you move something. Change one block's duration and you're manually recalculating every start time that follows.

Sessionplan gives you a proper planning workspace built around time:

  • Visual timeline: Every block sits on a real timeline. You see your full session at a glance.
  • Drag & drop: Move a block and every start time after it updates instantly. No maths, no reformatting.
  • Auto-calculated totals: The running duration and end time update in real time as you build your plan
  • No sign-up: Open the app and start. Your plans are saved in your browser – nothing in the cloud.
  • Share via link: One URL sends your complete session plan to anyone who needs it

Everything you need to plan and run a session

Flexible block types

Create custom block categories to match your format – or start from the defaults:

  • Input / Lecture – Structured knowledge transfer
  • Activity / Exercise – Hands-on and interactive elements
  • Discussion – Plenary conversations and Q&A
  • Break – Rest time, never forgotten
  • Energiser – Re-engagement moments when energy drops

Groups and breakout sessions

  • Groups – Bundle related blocks into collapsible phases
  • Breakout sessions – Plan parallel tracks for subgroups or teams

Live Mode

  • Run your session live – Activate Live Mode when the session starts. A slim overlay shows you the active block, time remaining and what comes next. Plan and run from the same tool – no switching, no printing.

Block library and templates

  • Library – Save frequently used blocks and drop them into any new plan
  • Templates – Save full session structures and reuse them across formats

Export and share

  • Share link – Complete session plan as a single URL. No files, no email attachments.
  • JSON export / import – Save plans locally or transfer to another device

Sessionplan vs. SessionLab

SessionLab is a well-known paid tool for workshop design. Here's how Sessionplan compares for people who need something lighter:

  • Completely free – SessionLab's free tier is limited; Sessionplan has no tiers
  • No account required – Start immediately, nothing to sign up for
  • Private by default – Data stays in your browser; optional server sync via Dynamic Link
  • Faster to start – No onboarding, no tutorial required

If you need team collaboration features or a library tied to a cloud account, SessionLab may be worth the cost. If you want something fast, private and free, Sessionplan is purpose-built for that.

Who uses Sessionplan

Anyone who plans time-structured sessions:

  • Trainers and coaches – Professional training days, coaching workshops, seminars

  • Dungeon Masters – D&D session prep with encounter timings and act structure

Free, ad-free and private by design

  • 100% free – No subscription, no premium tier, no expiry
  • No account needed – Start immediately without signing up
  • Your data stays with you – By default, everything stays in your browser
  • No ads – Plan without distractions

Frequently asked questions

Is Sessionplan really free?

Yes – completely. No subscription, no premium features gated behind a paywall, no trial period. Everything is available from the moment you open Sessionplan.de.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Open Sessionplan.de and start planning. Your sessions are saved in your browser's local storage – no email, no password.

What happens if I close the tab?

Your work is saved automatically in your browser's local storage and can be restored when you come back – as long as you're on the same device and haven't cleared browser data. Use the share link or JSON export to back up plans you want to keep long-term.

How do I share a session plan?

Use the Share button to generate a link. Anyone who opens the link sees your full plan in their browser. You can also export as JSON in the settings for offline backups or to import on another device.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once the app has loaded, you can plan without an internet connection. Useful for workshops in locations with unreliable WiFi.

Can I use it for things other than workshops?

Yes – anything with a time structure works: retrospectives, run-of-show documents, podcast episodes, D&D sessions, lesson plans. The underlying structure is the same: blocks, timings, a timeline.
